ABOUT US

The Daugavpils University history has started on November 4 ^th, 1921 when due to the lack of professionally prepared teachers the first four-year pedagogical secondary school in Latgale was opened in Daugavpils, Valdemāra Street 32 (now Ģimnāzijas Street). Jānis Jirgens had been nominated as the director of the educational institution. In 1923 it had been named as Daugavpils State Teachers’ Institute (1923 – 1952), and then as Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (1952 – 1993). After the resumption of Latvian independence, the institute has widened its activity and has been restructured becoming Daugavpils Pedagogical University (1993 – 2001). Since October 13^th, 2001 it has received its current title – Daugavpils University.

Daugavpils University is an ambitious, based on academic traditions, modern and competitive higher educational institution, that prepares competitive on the international market specialists and realizes scientific research of international level, as well as provides a qualitative and innovative education in the fields of nature, engineering, education, health, humanities and social sciences, stimulating development of Eastern Latvia and the whole country.

 STUDY AND RESEARCH CENTRE “ILGAS”

“Ilgas” is one of the most modern study bases in the Eastern Europe where the Centre of Coleopterological Research, as well as the DU collection of bugs, which currently is the biggest one in the Baltic countries, are located. Students of study programme “Biology” implement their field practice and realize their individual researches here.

LIFE SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGIES STUDY BUILDING

Life Sciences and Technologies Study Building is a great space for acquiring the corresponding to modern approaches knowledge and new technologies, and to proceed with investigations. The laboratories of chemistry, physics, quarternary environment, parasitology, hydroecology, biotechnology, histology and other study laboratories are located here, as well as the seminary rooms and rooms for academic staff. Rooms are equipped with the latest modern equipment.

NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE OF FOREST BIODIVERSITY

In 2016 the Research Centre of Forest Biodiversity was built. There are plenty of special rooms suitable for the storage of scientific collection materials in the building. The founded laboratory contains 9 climate chambers for the investigation of life cycles of organisms living in forest environment (entomophagous organisms, pest and animal parasites).

ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY

Astronomical observatory of Daugavpils University, in a form of eight-corner irregular prism with moving dome and modern telescope, allows to observe and discover the secrets of cosmic bodies, to study their diversity and peculiarities. Popular scientific lectures about cosmos and its investigation methods are organised in the observatory, whereas the students of Physics are able to participate in research projects and the elaboration of scientific papers on the theme of astronomy.

AGENCIES

Daugavpils University agency “Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology” (since 2017) is a research institute investigating fundamental and practical problems of ecology and environment in the Baltic Sea. Most of the work focuses on the Gulf of Riga and the Latvian part of the Baltic Proper, where the institute is also responsible for marine environmental monitoring.

The research themes embrace:

• marine environmental monitoring,
• long-term changes in the Baltic Sea,
• seasonal cycles in brackish plankton and benthic communities,
• gradients of substances and vertical fluxes,
• benthic-pelagic coupling,
• coastal biodiversity,
• invasive species,
• maritime spatial planning,
• algal toxins,
• ecotoxicological processes and factors.

Daugavpils University agency “Daugavpils University Medical College” (since 2018) – the college implements four professional higher education study programmes of the 1^st level in the fields of medical and social care.
