Latvian President, Irish Prime Minister discuss co-operation

Latvian President Andris Bērziņš met on June 6 with Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, expressing the hope that the bilateral partnership and political dialogue between Latvia and Ireland will continue to be successful.

He also called on Ireland to use Latvia as a business platform to develop co-operation with the Baltic States, Russia, the CIS, and countries in the Eastern Partnership programme and Central Asia.

Prime Minister Kenny congratulated the President on the fact that the European Commission and the European Central Bank have declared Latvia to be ready for accession to the euro zone, as well as on the fact that Latvia has been invited to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The President thanked Mr Kenny for Ireland’s support for membership in the OECD and the euro zone.

President Bērziņš and Prime Minister Kenny also discussed other EU issues, including the matter of closer economic and monetary integration. The officials agreed that as small countries, Latvia and Ireland have much in common, with opportunities to share their experiences in various areas, as well as more rapid growth and joint opportunities to look for partnership opportunities outside of the EU. Mr Kenny told the President about Ireland’s experience in overcoming the crisis and ensuring growth. The officials also discussed their countries’ experience in education, innovations and efforts to promote employment.
